Simple home adaptations you can use right now!
In the bathroom:
- Install a handheld shower and put a bench in the shower if you tire easily or have poor balance.
- Install night lights or motion sensor lights in hallways and bathrooms for those night-time trips.
- Install non-skid mat or non-skid strips to floor of tub.
- Install a grab bar vertically, next to the shower or tub for safety in getting in and out.
- Open blinds, curtains, and shades to increase natural lighting for environmental awareness.
- Install handrails on both sides of the hall or stairway for balance support.
- Place electrical, phone, and computer cords along walls where they will not trip anyone.
- Remove throw rugs.
- Remove clutter from stairs and in hallways to prevent trip hazards.
- Place a shelf near the front door on which to rest packages
- Relocate frequently used pots and pans or other kitchen items to the counter or an easy accessible area to minimize reaching too high or too low.
- Create a place to sit while preparing food.
- Install pull-out shelves and full extension drawers.
- Use rolling cart to transport items.
- Use soft-handled tools that are easy to grip.
